How to use it
- Type the credits and the grade of each course. Use a letter, such as A-, or a percent, such as 92.
- Choose Honors or AP/IB for a course that has extra weight.
- Read your GPA in the results.
- To find your new cumulative GPA, type your current GPA and the credits you earned.
How the GPA is worked out
Multiply the credits of each course by its grade points. Add the results. Divide the sum by the total credits.
An Honors course adds 0.5 to its grade points. An AP/IB course adds 1.0. A failed course adds nothing. The weighted GPA uses these extra points. The unweighted GPA does not.
To find a cumulative GPA, add the quality points of your old courses and of your new courses. Divide the sum by all the credits.
A worked example
- Biology: 4 credits, grade A (4.0 points). Quality points: 16.
- History: 3 credits, grade B+ (3.3 points). Quality points: 9.9.
- Calculus: 3 credits, grade A- (3.7 points, 4.7 with the AP/IB bonus). Quality points: 11.1.
Total: 37 quality points in 10 credits.
Unweighted GPA: 37 / 10 = 3.70.
Weighted GPA: 40 / 10 = 4.00.
Grade scale
The calculator uses this 4.0 scale. A percent changes to the letter in the same row. A percent between two rows goes to the lower row.
| Letter | Grade points | Percent |
|---|---|---|
| A+ | 4.0 | 97 to 100 |
| A | 4.0 | 93 to 96 |
| A- | 3.7 | 90 to 92 |
| B+ | 3.3 | 87 to 89 |
| B | 3.0 | 83 to 86 |
| B- | 2.7 | 80 to 82 |
| C+ | 2.3 | 77 to 79 |
| C | 2.0 | 73 to 76 |
| C- | 1.7 | 70 to 72 |
| D+ | 1.3 | 67 to 69 |
| D | 1.0 | 63 to 66 |
| D- | 0.7 | 60 to 62 |
| F | 0.0 | 0 to 59 |
Questions
How do I calculate my GPA?
Give each grade its grade points, such as 4.0 for an A. Multiply the points by the credits of the course. Add the results. Divide the sum by the total credits.
What is the difference between weighted and unweighted GPA?
An unweighted GPA uses the plain scale, with 4.0 as the top. A weighted GPA adds 0.5 for an Honors course and 1.0 for an AP/IB course, so it can be above 4.0.
How do I find my cumulative GPA?
Type your current GPA and the credits you earned. The calculator adds the quality points of your new courses to your old ones. Then it divides by all the credits.
Which grade scale does the calculator use?
It uses the common 4.0 scale with plus and minus grades. The table on this page shows it. Your school may use a different scale.
Can I type a percent instead of a letter?
Yes. Type a number from 0 to 100, such as 92. The calculator changes it to a letter with the table on this page.
Does the page save my courses?
The page saves them in your browser only, so they are there when you come back. The link of the page also holds them, so you can share your result. Read more about privacy.
