College GPA calculator
A college GPA counts each course by its credit hours. A 4-credit course moves your GPA more than a 1-credit course.
Add the courses of one semester to see your semester GPA. Then type your earlier GPA and credits to see your cumulative GPA.
Most colleges use the 4.0 scale. The rows start with 3 credit hours, and you can change them.

Semester GPA and cumulative GPA
Your semester GPA uses only the courses of one term. Your cumulative GPA uses every course you took at your college.
You do not need all your old grades to find a new cumulative GPA. You need your current GPA and the credits you earned.
The calculator multiplies your current GPA by your earned credits. It adds the quality points of the new courses. Then it divides by all the credits.
Why credit hours matter
Quality points are the credit hours of a course times its grade points. A 4-credit B gives 12 quality points. A 2-credit A gives 8.
A course with more credit hours has more effect on your GPA. A bad grade in a large course hurts more than a bad grade in a small course.
Use the credit hours that your college shows on your record. A lab with its own grade is a separate row.
A worked example of a semester
- Chemistry: 4 credits, grade B+ (3.3 points). Quality points: 13.2.
- Statistics: 3 credits, grade A- (3.7 points). Quality points: 11.1.
- Writing: 3 credits, grade A (4.0 points). Quality points: 12.
- Art: 2 credits, grade B (3.0 points). Quality points: 6.
Total: 42.3 quality points in 12 credits.
Unweighted GPA: 42.3 / 12 = 3.53.
Weighted GPA: 42.3 / 12 = 3.53.
Grade scale
The calculator uses this 4.0 scale. A percent changes to the letter in the same row. A percent between two rows goes to the lower row.

|---|---|---|
| A+ | 4.0 | 97 to 100 |
| A | 4.0 | 93 to 96 |

| B+ | 3.3 | 87 to 89 |
| B | 3.0 | 83 to 86 |
| B- | 2.7 | 80 to 82 |
| C+ | 2.3 | 77 to 79 |
| C | 2.0 | 73 to 76 |
| C- | 1.7 | 70 to 72 |
| D+ | 1.3 | 67 to 69 |

Questions
What is a good college GPA?
A 3.0 is a B average. Many scholarships and programs ask for 3.0 or more. Each college and program sets its own limit.
Do credit hours change my GPA?
Yes. A course with more credit hours counts more. A 4-credit course has twice the effect of a 2-credit course.
How do I find my semester GPA?
Type only the courses of that term. Leave the earlier GPA fields empty. The unweighted GPA in the results is your semester GPA.
Do pass or fail courses count?
Many colleges leave a pass course out of the GPA. Leave the grade empty for such a course. The calculator skips a row with no grade.
