Weighted GPA calculator
A weighted GPA gives extra points for hard courses. An unweighted GPA treats all courses the same.
Choose the type of each course. The result at the top is your weighted GPA. The unweighted GPA is next to it, so you can compare.

How to use it
- Type the credits and the grade of each course.
- Choose Regular, Honors or AP/IB for each course.
- Read your weighted GPA first. Then read your unweighted GPA.
- Compare the two numbers to see the effect of the bonus.
Weighted and unweighted GPA
An unweighted GPA uses the plain scale. An A is 4.0 in each course, and the top score is 4.0.
A weighted GPA adds a bonus for hard courses. An Honors course adds 0.5. An AP or IB course adds 1.0. So the top score can be 5.0.
The bonus counts only for a passing grade. A failed course gets no bonus.
Which GPA a school or college reads
Many colleges read both numbers. Some colleges work out their own GPA from your grades. Read the rules of each college.
Schools choose their own bonus values. This calculator uses the common values of 0.5 and 1.0.
Two GPA numbers from the same grades
- Algebra: 3 credits, grade A (4.0 points). Quality points: 12.
- Honors English: 3 credits, grade B+ (3.3 points, 3.8 with the Honors bonus). Quality points: 9.9.
- AP Calculus: 3 credits, grade B (3.0 points, 4.0 with the AP/IB bonus). Quality points: 9.
Total: 30.9 quality points in 9 credits.
Unweighted GPA: 30.9 / 9 = 3.43.
Weighted GPA: 35.4 / 9 = 3.93.
Questions
What is the highest weighted GPA?
With a bonus of 1.0 for AP/IB, the top is 5.0. With Honors only, the top is 4.5. Your school may set a lower limit.
Is a weighted GPA better than an unweighted GPA?
Neither one is better. The weighted GPA shows how hard your classes are. The unweighted GPA shows your grades on the plain scale.
Do all schools add 0.5 and 1.0?
No. These are common values, and the calculator uses them. Some schools use other values or no weights. Read the policy of your school.
Does a weighted GPA change my class rank?
At many schools it does, because the rank often uses the weighted GPA. Ask your school which GPA it uses for the rank.
