High school GPA calculator

Most high schools report two GPA numbers. The unweighted GPA uses the plain 4.0 scale. The weighted GPA adds points for hard classes.

Choose the type of each class. An Honors class adds 0.5 to its grade points. An AP or IB class adds 1.0.

Each class starts with 1 credit, the usual value for a full-year class.

How to use it

  1. Type the credits and the grade of each class. Use a letter or a percent.
  2. Choose Regular, Honors or AP/IB for each class.
  3. Read your weighted and unweighted GPA in the results.
  4. To add your earlier classes, type your current GPA and the credits you earned.

Credits in high school

Many high schools give 1 credit to a full-year class. A half-year class often gives 0.5 credit.

Change the credits of a row if your school uses another value. A class with 0.5 credit counts half as much as a class with 1 credit.

The rows start with a mix of types so you can see the choices. Change a type to Regular if the class has no extra weight.

Grade points with the bonus

This table shows the grade points of each letter. The bonus of Honors and AP/IB courses is in the last two columns. An F gets no bonus.

Questions

How many credits is a high school class?

Many schools give 1 credit to a full-year class and 0.5 credit to a half-year class. Your school may use other values. Check your record.

Why is my weighted GPA above 4.0?

Honors and AP/IB classes add bonus points to the grade points. An A in an AP class counts as 5.0, so the weighted GPA can pass 4.0.

Does a D in an AP class get the bonus?

Yes. The calculator adds the bonus to each passing grade. A failed class gets no bonus. Your school may have a different rule.

Which classes count as Honors?

Your school decides. An Honors class is often a harder version of a normal class. AP and IB classes follow a set course and end with an exam.
